Prepping for the Growing Seasons
If you are like me, you are definitely getting Spring Fever!! So, that means it is time for me to plan. At Moeller Family Farm we just don't go to the garden and start planting. We start by taking inventory of what and how much of our food supply needs to be replenished. We rely on food preservation to provide healthy food that we know exactly what and where it comes from. Not to mention that the cost of food! So that is why we believe the best way we can provide for our big-eaters (husband and children) is to grow and preserve it ourselves. After the inventory is complete, we start deciding which plants we need the most…which is usually tomatoes. We do so much with tomatoes (juice, salsa, corn salsa, soups, BBQ sauce, ketchup, spaghetti sauce, pizza sauce, etc.). It is a big staple for us -to say the least. We design and draw out our gardens to make sure we have the space for the number of plants we need for the year. Then there is complementary planting and rotation of the plants. So, during a cold spell, that usually happen after those wonderful days in the fifty's, we are designing out gardens to provide for us and for all of you. So, we even add some color (with markers) to our garden space designs…it brings such a joy to help with the gray days of winter!
